YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

I've just returned from Texas, literally. Thank you to all who expressed concern about my pretzel poisoning. I seem to have come out of it okay. I slept off the unpleasant aftertaste, had many wonderful encounters with librarians and other authors, ate a lot of delicious nachos, and got home in one piece!

Now . . . it' time for ASK MJ!

Would you ever try sky-diving? What do you think about that?

Hold on. I have my list of “Things I Won’t Do” right here. Let me have a look . . .

#14 Jam hand into beehive.
#15 Check out the source of "that weird noise" if accidentally stuck in horror movie.
#16 Ask Naomi Campbell if I can borrow her phone.

Ah. Here it is. Number seventeen. Skydive.

Listen, I don't want to offend anyone here . . . but I have to wonder about anyone who tosses him or herself out of a doorway at 20,000 feet. I mean, you do see the flaw in that logic, right? Have you asked yourself, "What would Darwin do?"

It took us hundreds of years to solve the problem of flight. Flight is awesome! We have snacks and movies and everything! The only trick is STAYING ON THE PLANE. That's it! We didn't go to all the trouble of defying physics just so people could throw themselves out the door.

Some people will undoubtedly say, "But the adrenaline rush!" That adrenaline rush is there to KEEP us from killing ourselves. The adrenaline helps you run from the fire or the polar bear or the shark on a Segway or whatever is after you. I personally don't need this kind of buzz. I get enough excitement. I have JK busting into my house every other day.

Hey, my question is:
Are you actually gonna answer ALL of these questions above?

DEPARTMENT OF ABBA

anonymous said...
What would you say is your favorite ABBA song, at this moment at least? Cause I can never decide which one I like the best, and since you are an expert on all things ABBA I was hoping you might help me decide.

This question reminded me to check on my Abba museum countdown meter. Only 412 days to go until the BEST MUSEUM IN THE WORLD opens. I almost fainted when I read about the opening week activities. Just look at this!

Friday June 5, 2009
International ABBA Tribute Band Day. ABBA tribute bands from all over the world perform.

Saturday June 6, 2009
Sweden’s National Day – ABBA Style.

Sunday June 7, 2009
ABBA-rocks! Closing party with the next generation ABBA. Fireworks extravaganza.

OH. MY. GOD. An “Abba style” Sweden Day? An Abba party with fireworks? A whole day of Abba tribute bands? Who lives in Stockholm? Who wants to go with me?

What was the question again? I’m so woozy.

aella siofra said...
Do you think Abba actually chose their own outfits? or were they merely the victims of a horrible conspiracy?

I don't understand this question. You seem to imply that there is something wrong with their outfits. All of the Abba outfits were carefully designed, and many will be at the museum!

Am I missing something? Is there a problem here?

ally said...
Why do I always do well on Pre-AP American History test where the multiple choice always have ABBA in them?

ABBA always helps in times of crisis. And DID YOU KNOW that Frieda (the dark haired one) is a princess? Her full name and title is Her Serene Highness Princess Anni-Frid Reuss, Countess of Plauen.

Would you ever write a book based on the movie Footloose? Are you looking forward to the remake (with Zac Efron)?

Famous hamster-eater Zac Efron is going to star in a remake of Footloose? Why didn’t anyone tell me? What is THAT craft services table going to be like?

I have a question:
What should I have for lunch? I don't have any bread, I do have burgers and fishfingers, but my grill doesn't work. I also have chocolate spread, mustard and eggs

Your choices seem limited to the last three items. I strongly support both the chocolate spread and mustard, but cannot get behind the eggs. I don’t like eggs. I wish I did, really . . . but I’ve never been able to eat them. Even the smell makes me hopelessly ill. Which is why I’m really wondering what joker added “I like eggs” to the list of my book titles on Wikipedia.

About your lunch . . . while I am perfectly content to eat mustard or chocolate spread right out of the jar, most people are not. And I’d offer you some of these cool chocolate cowboys that some Texas librarians gave me . . . but I got hungry when I got home and smashed them with a bowl and ate their heads.

What are your feelings on hummus?

Basically, hummus is to me what hamsters are to Zac.

DEPARTMENT OF READING MATERIALS

itokro said...
Is Suite Scarlett only out in America?

A while ago I tried to find your books in Britain - I visited every bookstore in Cambridge before being told they'd have to order them specially and get them shipped over from the US. And yet yesterday, in Guildford, I saw a copy of 13 Little Blue Envelopes just sitting on the shelf in the bookshop. Does this mean you are published here after all? Or is it just the magical effects of proximity to the London office?

Welcome to the bane of my existence, itokro. Aside from The Bermudez Triangle (of which I think 4 copies were printed), I have no books out in the UK. From what I’ve been told, the UK hates YA and has denied admission to many of us!

So I have NO EXPLAINATION for why there was a 13 Little Blue Envelopes on a shelf in Guildford . . . except that maybe someone in Guildford figured out that I am in Guildford ALL THE TIME, ordered an American copy, and put it there. Guildford is, after all, the location of the “London” office. Maybe Oscar did it. Or JK. Did you see any food wrappers around it?

Until the books are released there, I guess I have to offer my special Reading Service, where I come to your house and read your mj book of choice to you.

Do you require MJ Reader Services?

i loved SUITE SCARLETT! remember me + Spencer= long lasting marrage only to be ended by one of the weasley twins, lol.

Spencer has been getting an awful lot of attention, even in these early days. I predict that he will be giving Keith Dobson a serious run for his money. But I can't let you marry him if you're just going to leave him. He'll get all depressed and he won't work anymore. Don't break my characters, bro.

hannah said...

This is a very general question, but I was wondering who writes the blurbs for books?

Blurbs are usually quotes from other authors, but they can be from anyone, really. (Usually someone famous.) Like if Her Serene Highness Princess Anni-Frid Reuss, Countess of Plauen wanted to give me a quote . . . let's stop. I can't even think about that.

MJ
my friend is currently extrimly mad @ u because 1 shes is not scarletts 11 2 you didn't answer her "very nice" email so @ school we call you The-auther-that-cannot-be-named and its slightly annoying (sorry shaylaluna if ur reading this) so I suggest u answer that I wasn't allowed to enter thanks to moi mother but I am begging you to sell the free alan rickman shirts also my friend and i are aginst borders because for my b day when you first said it was out(Im using small words cause I have issues spelling)she went to get it and they didn't have please repliy to this :^)
karozoluvzu

I am always sorry to hear that I have failed one of you in some way, and I am certainly sorry to hear that I am “the author that cannot be named.” I’m like . . . Voldemort? Really? Let me see what I can do to address the problems.

First, sorry about your friend and Scarlett’s Eleven. This is the problem with running any kind of a contest. I knew it was going to be hard to pick eleven people. And I do my best to answer my e-mail . . . but things sometimes get a little out of control in MJ land. But I read every single one. Every. Single. One.

As for Borders not having the books out on the shelf when you went to get one, I am sorry about that, though I have no control over Borders. Borders is generally very nice when it comes to my books, and I like them a lot. I’ve heard from a few Borders people that they have opened the boxes and that Suite Scarlett is now out on the tables and shelves. So if you go back, it should be there!

I hope that you will now say my name again. I’m all stressed out now.

DEPARTMENT OF CONTESTS

Scholastic has told me that the INCREDIBLY AWESOME CONTEST that I’ve been telling you about for a while is scheduled to kick off on May 1st. I can confirm that the prize includes both NEW YORK CITY and ME. (You don’t get to keep either one . . . just to be clear.)

In the meantime . . . I have STUFF TO GIVE OUT! Starting NOW! In each of the next posts, I’ll be passing out some copies of Suite Scarlett and some awesome, limited edition, super-special SUITE SCARLETT SLEEP MASKS.

Today I am giving out one signed book and ten sleep masks.

TO WIN A SIGNED COPY OF THE BOOK: Leave a comment letting me know you don’t have a copy yet and you’d like one. I’ll draw a winner at random.

TO WIN A SLEEP MASK: Have you read Suite Scarlett? What did you think? Would you share your thoughts with everyone who hasn’t read the book yet? (Without dropping any spoilers, please. Spoilers will get deleted.) The first ten people to leave their mini-reviews in the comments win! (I realize that this means you have to have READ the book. Don’t worry . . . this is the only time that will be a factor!)

The deadline is WHENEVER I POST NEXT.

Skydiving = insult to science. Someone worked so hard to get those witches or birds or whatever to carry those planes--and people are going to jump out and disregard that?!
I would love a copy of Suite Scarlett but do not yet have one!

I would totally lie and said I read the book already, just for the sleep mask, if it wasn't so unfair and horrible. So I'm going to be good and just try for the first contest! Yay me!

I want a signed copy of the book! I'm on spring break with nothing to do, and it would really make my year if I got one. :)

MJ, I said your name. You're forgiven. YOu answered K's question. Yay you. No offense was ment by th eVoldermort remark.
I would love a copy of Suite Scarlett so bad. I have yet to get it. Also, my bat mitzvah is may 3 and the best gift would totally be Suite Scarlett.
Oh, and by the way my Ask MJ question is what is your opinion of Phillip Pullman, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkein.
I read The World of the Golden Compass, edited by Scott Westerfeld. I read your article but there was another article called Tempest in a British Teacup. What's is your opinion?
I would really love in you answered the question and also if I got the copy of Suite Scarlett. Please, Please, Please.

Miz Maureen--

If you would be so kind, I would very much like a copy of Suite Scarlett, as I have been seriously deprived book-wise as of late--not only has the only bookstore I can easily access recently closed, but I lost my library card on the bus, and what's worse I keep going to their website and placing holds only to remember that I HAVE NO CARD and being forced to cancel them, which is AGONY. *curses sky in futility*

Also, the book itself looks completely awesome and features many things I love (New York! Broadway! Aging, opinionated Broadway divas! HAMLET ON UNICYCLES!), and it would just be really, really awesome if I got it.

Also, on the subject of movie-musicals (which someone asked about last post), I have noticed, to no small amount of glee, that you referenced Moulin Rouge!, otherwise known as the Best Movie Seriously Ever (well, one of them), in not one, but two of your books (13LBE and Bermudez)...may I hear your opinion, s'il vous plait?

I am very relieved that you recovered from your pretzel-poisoning. Long may you live and write!

I swear I'm not a zombie,

Ashley

I've actually already read the book already ;) so I'm in this for the sleep mask!

I loved the book and I told everyone I know to go and check it out! I love the realism and the characters and it truly is just amazing (and funny)! (Can't wait for the next one)

I'll also have a review up in a couple of days on my blog!!

I just finished Suite Scarlett about a minute ago! I read your new post an hour or so ago and decided to finish the book right now so I could try to get one of the sleep masks!

Suite Scarlett was AMAZING, MJ!!! It's seriously one of my favorite books ever!! I am so happy that it is a series, because if it wasn't, I would be very upset right now. I need to know more about all of the characters!

I loved how Scarlett's character really developed over the course of the book. She really took charge at the end and helped save the show.

I loved all of the parts of the book about theatre. I am an aspiring actress myself, so it was great to read about the process of a show. I love being in productions, so it was great to read about the crazy and thrilling feeling of being in one that is so familiar to me.

I want to live in NYC so bad, and reading this book wanted me to live there even more! The city was like... another character in the book!

I love all of the Martins! Spencer is awesome. He's such a great brother. Lola is so sweet and kind to Scarlett. It was nice to see Marlene help them all out in the end.

I can't wait to see what happens between Eric and Scarlett! I liked how their relationship wasn't completely perfect. It had a lot of flaws and that made it seem very real.

Mrs. Amberson is so unpredictable! I never knew what she was going to come up with next! I'm so happy that Scarlett took the job so that we get to see more of their crazy adventures.

Suite Scarlett was incredible. It was definitely my favorite book of yours. I simply could not put it down! I'm eagerly awaiting the next part of Scarlett's story!

I read Scarlett out on my back porch last Sunday. Let's just say that it was so entertaining that I didn't notice that I was burning and ended up with a painful, red, blistered back and backs of legs, plus some sun poisoning. I entirely blame you for this, Maureen, as you are the author of the book that distracted me so. But I suppose I can forgive you since you are writing a sequel and having CONTESTS! As for a review of the book...well, not just any book can give you sun poisoning. Also, I love the characters (especially Spencer, of course!) and I think that this is your best book yet. Your sense of humor really shines through.

Hi! I finished Suite Scarlett! I enjoyed it! I have never been to NY, but I do enjoy how it comes to life in my mind through your story. I love the Broadway scene and the stuff that goes with all that. A different flavor than Hollywood.

My thoughts are that the characters in this book are very honest and unique. Their relationship with each other will be fun to watch in the future books. I was impressed how observant Scarlet was with everyone around. She's a good protagonist. Keepin' it real!

I do not have a Suite Scarlett and I want one a whole freaking lot! I was asked in a job interview yesterday to describe myself as a building, and I chose an Art Deco one. When I was growing up, I wanted to have themed rooms like the guest rooms at the Hopewell Hotel. I am even using Art Deco themes, styles, fonts, etc. for my personal website. I love YA; it's what I write and what I read every second I don't have work to do for college. There is nothing I don't like about the setup for Suite Scarlett. And in two weeks, I will be Free from the School System forever -- what better graduation present but a copy of a book I've been waiting months to read? Please, MJ, randomly choose me!

"I was excited by this book and I was not disappointed. Filled with Johnson's quirky sense of humor and fabulous understanding of what it is like being a teenage girl, Suite Scarlett is a fun romp through hotel history and acting culture in New York City. The secondary characters and short articles about the hotel really make the book. I would love to see a continuation of the story, especially if Johnson would write a book for each of the other Martin siblings, fascinating in their own rights. And Mrs. Amberson nearly steals the show!"

You can view the whole review at http://oopswrongcookie.blogspot.com/ where myself and several other librarians blog about YA books.

Also, SPENCER IS MINE!!! I almost wish he wasn't Scarlett's brother, because he would, I think, beat out Parker in the "best character that involved a romantic relationship w. protag" oscar. And he would be such a good boyfriend for Scarlett! Oh, it's ok, he gets to be her brother. THANK YOU FOR CREATING HIM! He's my idol.

I really don't know about Eric. On one hand, he is really nice, but on the other, he did have a boyfriend, and he does not act like a good boyfriend to Scarlett. Hmmmmmmmm. I don't know. I think not.

Wait, did the post above count as a review? I hope so, but in case not, I'll write a real review. Feel free to ignore this if the post above did count as a review.

I read the ARC of Suite Scarlett in one sitting. It is an amazing book. It is hilarious and insane, but also really heartfelt. I could definitely identify really well with Scarlett, and her relationship with Eric is complex and true-to-life. I loved Spencer insanely, he was so funny and sweet! Your descriptions of a family were spot-on, down to the joking, teasing, and disappointment. I want to live in the Hopwell Hotel, and the descriptions were great. I also definitely want to meet Mrs. A, and hang out with her for a while.

In short, I loved everything about it.

Hi Maureen! I loved Suite Scarlett, but I have a question. If Scarlett's family decides to convert the hotel into something more theatre based and put up a stage in the dining room, where will they feed the guests? Will they take down and set up the stage every day? (This seems like a lot of work if Scarlett had to pull an all nighter to take the stage down the last time) of will they build an addition/ change the acritechture (changing the authenticity)?

o i hope that counted as a review. but if not here's a real one :)

Suite Scarlett is by far one of the best books written by young adult author, Maureen Johnson; second only to her third novel 13 Little Blue Envelops. Ms. Johnson successfully published a charming novel full of wit, drama, love, and rivalries. I personally cannot wait for the thus unnamed companion novel.

I think I'm number twelve, but I'm submitting a review anyway. Maybe I'll count because some of the reviews were like...

Suite Scarlett is a really good book! I couldn't put it down! Best one yet.

...and that doesn't show that you read it at all.

ANYWAY, I like sharing my love of Suite Scarlett even if I don't win a sleep mask.

Suite Scarlett is really enjoyable to read for a lot of reasons. I think it has the most Maureen-like humor than any other MJ books. The characters are all pretty well developed. Most of the characters are easy to like, except the obvious. Such as Marlene. I love Ms. Amberson and her crazy stunts. I can just imagine someone sitting out on the flower box ledge calling it a balcony. And I love all the theatery goodness. And the reoccuring Jenga jokes were the besssst!!!!

Yay! -Karen

Ok, so sorry about the probably really poor comment by me that is farther up, but I was in math class on my ipod when I posted that! I was finished with my assignment, and poking around online with my touch (ipod) when I decided to read your latest blog entry, and saw the contest. I was instaly like I NEED A MASK! SO I went to the bathroom, and hastily wrote a reveiw. Sorry about that, but here is my real one, which I left in teh comments in Let Me Enable You, the other blog post in which you asked for people's opinions on Scarlet:
Ok, I got Scarlet in the mail yesterday! And of course I imediately sat down to read it. Maureen, it was amazing. I can't wait for the next one. It was funny, and entertaining, and I couldn't stop reading until I got to the end. There is only one thing that bothers me. In your acknowledgments there is one part that goes like this: "And if you don't like this book, please blame them and pretend that I had nothing to do with it."
Maureen, do you seriously believe that someone could NOT like your book? (or any f your books for that matter) Well, if you do, then I must tell you, you are wrong. (not to be rude or anything)

Well, I have all of your books. (I don't actually have them all but I've read them all and I feel like it would be unfair if someone who hasn't read them didn't get one.) And I'm not in the top ten. But I still say that dedication was AMAZING.

WOW. I just came across a comment in Entertainment Weekly, and in response to people's negative comments about ALAN RICKMAN's singing voice, they said "He might not be famous for his voice, but it's velvety and sexy in that Alan Rickman way." More proof of his (invisible to some) mojo.

HI I would LOVE a signed copy of Suite Scarlett!!! My lovely book store has a beautiful stack of your books in stock. However me very mean mother has refused to buy it for me "Elaina you have a stack of books you still need to read...blah blah" what she fails to understand is that you can never have too many good books.

So hopefully I can win a signed copy or I will have to start saving pennies or something lol. =D

I loved the book. I thought you wrote all of their characters really well. They all had very unique identities and ways of speaking. Even if you hadn't written "said..." next to the quotes I would have been able to guess who was saying it based on their diction and tone. I really liked the part of the book about Marlene and her cancer-story. It was only a side story, but it provided a really well rounded plot, the larger one involving Scarlett was the main story, but the side plots about the family made it that much more realistic.

I also liked how you compared Scarlett's sister to the blonde from ABBA, it was so you.

I'd love a sleeping mask!

And it was AMAZING. I have always been partial to The Bermudez Triangle, but Suite Scarlett has definitely bumped it from its coveted spot of favorite. It was just so...you. I felt like I was just reading a particularly long and crazy blog entry, which led to no end of entertainment.

I doubt that I'm one of the first ten, but it's worth a shot.

I do not have the book and I would like it. Unfortunately I have not heard of a gift registry at a book store, or I would have insisted my fiance let me do that in addition to Bed Bath and Beyond, where we registered last Sunday. (When we buy a house and need housewarming presents I will insist on Ikea, but we don't need much furniture right now, just mostly kitchen items.) Anyway, since I cannot get it free by registry, and I have to save money for the wedding next summer, I would love to get a free copy from you.

I don't have a copy of Suite Scarlett yet, but I would very much like to have one. My local "bookstore" has about 10 YA book, all of which I've read. And they refuse to special order Suite Scarlett for me because "it hasn't been released yet" I assured them that the author told me it was, but they just told me to stop holding up the line. Should I recieve a copy from you, I'm pretty sure I'll go back to the store and show it to them, so that they might order some copies for the other poor souls that live here in the middle of nowhere. That's right, I will use my copy of Suite Scarlett to help spread the Scarlett-ness throughout my whole town. Also, you know, I kind of really want to read it.

Maureen,
I am extremely happy to hear that you have recovered from the pretzel poisoning incident.
That said, I do not have a copy of Suite Scarlett in my greedy little hands, because I live in Juneau, Alaska, a.k.a. "Two-months-later-land", because everything that happens here (such as the release of a book you've been looking forward to for quite a long time), happens two months later than it does everywhere else. Plus, an AUTOGRAPHED copy would be rather like a dream come true... So, to conclude, I would like very much to be entered to win one of ten, super-special autographed copies of Suite Scarlett!

10:28 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

okay mj, here's the deal: I live in Australia (land of the kangaroos, land where everything gets released here LAST) and so Suite Scarlett ISN'T RELEASED HERE YET. I know, travesty. You know what this means, right? It means I have not gotten my hands on your book. DOUBLE TRAVESTY.

It would be awesome if your little randomised competition stretched to Australia, because then I could def. win it. For real.

Maureen, I do not have a copy of Suite Scarlet let. I spent all my book money to go on a feild trip to see Mamma Mia. So I can't get the book I must wait until I get more money, which may take some time. And as I am the offical book person/libary for my whole group the day after i get it and finish it Scarlet will make her way into the hands of all my friends. So really if you pick me not only shall I get a copy but all my friends will see it and have to get it. And than word of you and Suite Scarlet being out will spred all though out the area.

I'm one of those people that has to spend all her money on presents for her coach because it is the coach's last year. And her team is basically non-exsistant when it comes to the donating and generosity department. Also she is so nice she is still going to let her other teamates sign the card for the gifts. But it elates her to think this is the last year! The last time ever! :)

But I really mean it this time! So please enter me in the contest. :D

However, I have been in love with New York City for the past 10 years, and I am very excited to read a YA book that takes place in NYC. Especially because it is written by you, so I already know that it will be amazing! Someday I will live in New York; I just have to work up the courage to make it happen.

PS - When I saw the picture of the guinea pig captioned "Footloose Burger", I laughed for a very long time. Thanks for making me laugh as always!

I ran (or got my dad to drive me) to the book store to get Suite Scarlett because no one else was assertive enough to tell those Borders people that your book was in fact out. I onthe other hand have no problems with being assertive. I rather enjoy it. But alas no Suite Scarlett for me. I made do with Jane Eyre, Fight Club, The Princess Bride, and Pride and Prejeduce. That Mr. Rochester is infuriating and yet I just can't hate him. >.< I really hope you pick me to get Suite Scarlett! Happy Earth Day!

Hey MJ!

I, EllenBelinn, have been a faithful blog-reader and book-reader of the fabulous Maureen Johnson for quite some time now. I missed the Scarlett's Eleven contest and was very sad! Anyways, I HAVE read Suite Scarlett. And I'd like to say it was AWESOME.

I know this may be something that EVERYONE else is saying too, (which is a very, very good thing) but I really enjoyed reading Suite Scarlett. I liked the idea that Scarlett and her family were quite broke and lived in a dying hotel. It made it all seem real to me. And of course, you have thrown in some hilarious, random, extremely irrevelant (but still fantastic) lines along the way. This book was one of your best so far.

I also could relate to Scarlett very well. I have an older brother who is protective and that I can really relate to, quite like Scarlett and Spencer. I also have a mischevious, frankly annoying little brother as well, maybe not as rude as Marlene but still annoying, and I found that I could relate to Scarlett on that level.

Eric wasn't my favourite character. He was okay, but I liked that the and Scarlett had problems and weren't just perfect together. I like Keith and Aidan better, though.

I really enjoyed Suite Scarlett, and would love to recieve a sleeping mask! Thanks for being such a wonderful writer!
