CATCH SCARLETT FEVER!

When I wrote about the LONDON GATHERING yesterday, I said that my next blog would be an advice blog. But I didn’t know that when I woke up this morning, the advance uncorrected proofs of Scarlett Fever would be READY TO GO. It was a huge shock.

I have them here.

Scarlett Fever, as you may or may not know, is the sequel to Suite Scarlett. These Scarlett Fevers could not be ANY HOTTER OFF THE PRESSES. No one has these. Reviewers don’t have them. MY AGENT doesn’t even have hers yet. And I just finished going over the corrections and page proofs YESTERDAY.

I am offering COPY #1. A hot ticket indeed!

And what do you have to do to SCORE THIS AMAZING PRIZE?

Well, I am going to have a little contest. I need you to make some GUESSES about what happens in this book and e-mail them to me.

“What do you mean?” you may be asking, because you are always asking clever questions.

I mean, take what you know about Suite Scarlett, and TAKE A FEW STABS AT WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT. I will choose the MOST AWESOME GUESS.

Unlikely things may happen.

“Wait,” you are probably saying, because you are also very good at choosing moment when I should pause and clarify. “Define awesome. Do you mean crazy? Do you mean accurate? EXPLAIN YOURSELF.”

I mean awesome. Awesome may mean that you guess correctly. Awesome may also mean that you’ve just cooked up the most insane thing I’ve ever heard. Awesome may mean that you’ve written a scene you think should be in the book, and that scene turns out to be awesome. Or maybe, you will DRAW what happens. Or make a video. I do not know what YOU will do because YOU are full of wonders. All I can say is, you must make some kind of guess, and do it in whatever format you want, and make sure I get it by THURSDAY (the 11th) at 8PM, NYC time.

That's:

1AM in the UK
5PM in California and PARTS WEST
6PM in Denver, where my agent is
7PM in MIDDLE US
8PM in New York City, where I AM

I will then REVIEW the submissions and give the book to one of you.

How will I choose?

Copies of the book are currently rare, but I will give away some more as the summer goes on. But only one copy can be copy #1. Just imagine that. The very first one.

People will covet what you have.

“One more question,” you say, because you are nothing if not thorough. “Do I have to have read Suite Scarlett to enter?”

Well, technically no. But the book will mean more if you have, because it’s a sequel. And your guesses will probably make more sense, because you’ll know who the characters are. If you haven’t read it, you can do so NOW.

Why not read the book now?

The next blog, I promise, will be AN ADVICE BLOG. Now, GET TO IT!

very interesting contest... but I would like to point out that when you were listing off the times that the entries would be due, you listed that Indianapolis is an hour behind New York, which is not correct. 99% of Indiana (not including maybe three counties in the south and one or two up north) are the the same time as New York, so you may need to find another city to be your 7 o'clock... say, Chicago maybe?

John Green and Indianapolis are EST, by the way.

And I will spend the next few summer vacation days working on AWESOME in the form of this :D

If I can come up with "Empire Suites Back," surely I can think of AWESOME things I know will happen in Scarlett Fever.

I shall guess-stab the hell out of your sequel!!!

The guys in the picture will turn into They Might be Giants, and start rocking out with David Bowie. But Aliens and hamsters will come out of nowhere and steal their instruments. This means that they will have to go through a marvelous adventure, fighting demons, ghosts in jars and name tags. They will have to save damsels in distress, like John Green. They will find a new bond between themselves, and become the best of friends and over time, a team of super heroes. As they near the end of their journey, they will team up with the Mountain Goats, who have also have had their stuff stolen, to defeat the hamsters and aliens. At last, when they've finally completed their great quest, they will realize that the friendship that they have through their journey was much greater than any reward they could have gotten for completing it. They will then proceed to play the greatest song ever created, which will bring peace to the universe. They will continue their lives as the scone men, people who travel from city to city handing out scones and other pastries.

I like scones.

Hmm. Quick question before I start.

May we have multiple "guess strategies" in ONE e-mail?
*ahem* Let me elaborate.
May I do a video of a crazy guess, and a scene of a possibly right guess AND draw a picture of ONE thing exactly right and send it all in and I won't be failed out of MJ's Contest-ness of ARC NUMBA1.!*

SOOOO;
True or False.
Yes or No.
Maybe or Maybe So.
ABBA rules all OR the baby just went back into a coma?

It's all up to YOU ,Maureen Johnson, my favorite YA author.

(Not in disregard to my other YA authors, but are YOU having contests? I keed.I keed.)

Seeing as how I have never read Suite Scarlett [yet], I am just going to take a wild stab at this...

Scarlett's life has been in turmoil. Her grades suck and her boyfriend broke up with her. BUT THEN SHE FINDS A LLAMA! She falls in love with the llama and names him Roy. Then at the end of the book, after all the fluff and the so-called "interesting parts" and "climax", she and Roy ride off into the sunset on their way to live on a farm in Idaho.

Free book! Ahead of time! *eyes grow wide*
My guess is that Spencer, undeterred by previous disasters, decides that he is going to put on West Side Story! Longing to sing that great hit "Tonight," he casts himself as the star of both the show and Scarlett Fever, because frankly, Spencer doing Musical Theater is far more interesting than any plot, character development, or any of that rubbish that might happen to Scarlett.
Spencer renames the book Spencer Side Story, and cackles evilly at all the headaches this causes Maureen's publishers. Well, he tries, but he is so nice that all he can manage is a mildly threatening chuckle.
Finally, Scarlett, appalled at this lack of respect from her older brother, grabs Alan Rickman from J.K. Rowlings dungeon, and hides out in Maureen Johnson's basement, watching ABBA on a constant loop.
And then the book ends.

I will admit I have not finished Suite Scarlett (I'm about half-way through it) so please don't punish me Maureen because my guess may possibly not make any sense!

Okay my guess is that Mr. Amberson (I have no idea about him except that Mrs. Amberson thinks he's more of an "idea") suddenly returns to New York from where ever he may be (I'm guessing he was in London and Mrs. Amberson was trying to get away from him) looking for his lovely wife, but he is unable to find her until he accidentally runs into Scarlett and Eric in Central Park while they're on a date and asks if they've ever heard of her because he is desperate. Thinking that he is one of Mrs. Amberson's many theatre friends, Scarlett tells Mr. Amberson that his wife is staying at the Hopewell and offers to take him to her right after she gives her a quick phone call that she's bringing one of her friends to the hotel to see her. Flashforward to Mrs. Amberson coming down to meet her "friend"; she pretty much faints at the sight of her husband and runs back to the Empire Suite, locking the door behind her for an entire day. When Scarlett comes to the suite to see her the next day, she opens the door to find Mrs. Amberson completly gone and has checked out without so much as a goodbye (she leaves two large wads of cash on her bed though, one for Scarlett and one as payment for her stay). After a few weeks and after Mr. Amberson has flown to Thailand in hopes that his wife might be there, Mrs. Amberson shows up back in the Empire Suite and returns to her "normal life" in the hotel without another mention of Mr. Amberson but becomes incresingly more strange as the days pass. The rest of the book will be spent with Scarlett dealing with Eric/life drama and figuring out what happened between Mr. and Mrs. Amberson.

That would be my entry for you, I'm going to now actually FINISH Suite Scarlett and laugh at how absurd my idea probably is once I finish the book.

(It did have 2 of your other books though, so yay!)

Also, this kinda reminds me of The Polar Express. All the other children will get awesome presents SOON. But only one person can get The FIRST Present of Christmas!

I think Scarlett will learn that boys suck.
She'll get awesome grades, move to NY, become a fab writer, and go through a sex & the city phase.

The end.

I'm in revisions phase right now of my book. my creativity is at an all time low. forgive the complete lack of originality in my ending.

Dear Maureen,

If you were me and therefore stuck on SIX separate connecting flights for the duration of your trip from Phoenix to Montréal and back, what would you do to commemorate each of the five airports you'll be visiting?

Kindly,

i'm very lax at reading your blog, but you're not as blog happy as some, so it works out well. being so lax you might have said this somewhere else like twitter or one of those high tech places that i don't know about, but were you going to share the winning entry with the masses? i don't care about COPY #1 - i just want to know what unlikely things happened in word/pic/vid to compete with your amusing meanderings.
