SUITE SCARLETT DAY

This is it! Today, Suite Scarlett is 100%, officially out there! Which means I can finally tell you about the AMAZING CONTEST! I have been hinting about this contest for ages, so I am very, very happy to pull back the curtain and reveal it at last!

As you may or may not know, Suite Scarlett is about life in a small New York City hotel, owned and operated by the (somewhat destitute) Martin family. (It’s also about theater companies, unicycles, plush towels, black dresses, yachts, and curly hair—but those things are less relevant to the prize. At least, for the moment.)

Let’s get right to it.

PRIZE PART ONE

YOU and SOMEONE ELSE each get a round-trip airline ticket to NEW YORK CITY!

First, the plane will come for you.

But we would not just drop you off and leave you with nowhere to go and nothing to do. That would be sad.

This will not be your fate.

PRIZE PART TWO

From there, you and The Person You Brought With You will be taken to a FANCY NEW YORK HOTEL! To stay the night, I mean! Not just to stare at it longingly from the sidewalk!

Glamour will be yours!

From there, Manhattan is YOURS (and the OTHER PERSON’S)! But someone else will be there!

PRIZE PART THREE

There’s a third part that I am having a harder time bragging about. Because the third part of the prize is me. You cannot KEEP me, but you get me for one afternoon brunch, during which we will LAUGH IT UP and perhaps even re-enact some of our favorite scenes from Shakespeare.

Us. (No champagne, though.) (And don't even try singing that line from The Sound of Music about wanting to stay and taste some. I am immune to The Sound of Music.) (The musical, I mean.)

To enter the contest (and read all of the legal details), go to the official Scholastic Point website. (If you don’t see the entry form there now, it will be there within the day.) A few things to know:

1. You do not have to buy a copy of Suite Scarlett to enter! But why not get one and read it anyway, so that we will have lots of things to talk about, and you can help me write the next book! (Which may be done by then—so maybe you will get spoilers, or you will help me write the third book!)

2. You have to be between the ages of 13-18 to enter.

3. If you are a minor, the "other person" has to be a parent or guardian. So this is a good way for people over the age of 18 to get around this problem. I'm not saying you should force your child to enter, but maybe you could influence him/her with sweets or jewels or books or something.

4. The contest will run from May 1st, 2008 until August 1st, 2008.

5. I am not running this contest, so I can't change any of the rules.

6. I think when we have lunch, I will have some ICE CREAM.

7. Void where prohibited. Though, I have no idea where this would be prohibited. Unhappyland? Miserytown? Sadville? Anyway, if you live in one of these places that prohibits things, this is prohibited. Also, move.

Want to see a video I just made that explains a lot of that, and also tells you more about New York City? Okay!

Here in mj land, all of May is Suite Scarlett month! So let’s get it started RIGHT by giving away 25 SPECIAL EDITION SUITE SCARLETT EXTREMELY COLLECTIBLE SLEEP MASKS. Let’s do it NOW.

Simply leave a comment asking a question about Suite Scarlett or what YOU want to know about New York City . . . and you will have entered. 25 commenters will win!

And let’s give away today’s book.

AMUSING BUT TRUE . . . . when I put the comments through my fancy, patented “random winner system” . . . . Scott Westerfeld won the copy. But I happen to know Scott already has a copy, so the winner of SCOTT WESTERFELD’S COPY OF SUITE SCARLETT IS . . . cortney t. Cortney, send me your name and address so that YOU can check into the Hopewell Hotel.

All right! Let's see some comments!

This is screwed. Seriously. Because I just turned 19 TODAY - and am therefore ineligible for your Big New York Contest Thingy. Oh wells.

But I can still enter for the Sleep Mask Thingy (yay!), which is good because I could really use one of those. My sleeping habits are bad. My question: does Scarlett have a middle name? Sorry if I missed it, I read the book...

Also, Happy Birthday Jacleen!

I have a question for you about New York. I know you never lie, Maureen, and that you are full of truthiness, but I have to ask. Was that guy in your video for real or did you just have one of your friends dress up and act like he ate out of dumpsters? And if he was for real, I have to ask where you found him, because I met nobody like that when I went to New York. Of course, I also did not engage anyone with a video camera.

Very cute video, Maureen.
The Big Contest sounds so very awesome. I am glad to be 16.
Wow a lot of commenter with birthday, Happy Birthday Jacleen and Leah.

Maureen, that video was awesome.

But my question isn't directly about New York City...it's more about the video. How long did that guy talk? It looked like you edited some of it, and he seemed like he could have gone on forever if you'd let him. Which would make a hilarious bonus video, by the way.

Awesome contest. Just wondering if it's only for people that live in the US or whether people in other countries can enter? (such as New Zealanders who have already bought Scarlett off Amazon for example...)

Maureen Johnson you make me so sad...well not you as you have no control over the rules of the contest but still sadness. Why when I was under 18 was I too young to do anything and now that I am over 18 I am too old? Where did I miss the age of awesome eligability for awesome contests and such?

On a happier note I read the book and loved it and cannot wait for the next one.

What hotels did you base Hopewell off of? And where did you get the inspiration for the eye poking hair curl? That was just genius. Really, I'm calling you genius. Shakespeare-making-up-words genius.

Haha, I loved that video! I would love to go dumpster diving and get mugged! Lol, seriously NYC sounds cool anyway. =) I was wondering if you got to stay at lots of hotels as 'research' for Suite Scarlet? Coz personally I've never been to a hotel. =(
Anyhoo, I can't wait to read the book!
Omg, Fab! You live in New Zealand too?! (I think?) That is so cool! What a freaky-deaky coincidence though!

Perhaps it is a little odd for a 25 year old man to be disappointed that he can't enter a contest based on a book about a 15 year old girl, but I am confident in my masculinity and the wife and I could really use a nice weekend away. Oh well. I really enjoyed Suite Scarlett. I think that it is my 2nd favortie MJ book (after Key to the Golden Firebird), and I am glad there will be sequels. The ending was good, but would not have been satisfying if I wasn't going to get to see more of the characters.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! I can't believe I won a copy of Suite Scarlett...you are the BEST!!
Now I shall ask you a question (although I won't be terribly disappointed if you decide I shouldn't get a sleep mask too)

What is you absolute favorite place in New York City? If you had to be stuck somewhere for hours and hours, where would it be?

Thanks again!!

Hmmm... my question about New York is: How do they get so much awesome contained in one place?!?! I read Suite Scarlett and am so much in love with New York. (Even more so than before) I've only been there once before but didn't really get to see much. Also, Scarlett's demon-possessed curl s all too much a reality for me and my cousin. Only mine are more frizzy spirals that make me look like I dropped my toaster in the bath tub.
Side note: Are you going on tour for Suite Scarlett? My cousin told me you're going to her school for a thing with her book club and I am so jealous I think I might go transfer so I can go.

Hmm... I'm coveting a sleep mask after reading about Leia's on Bookshelves of Doom, so... what do you think is the biggest misconception outsiders have about New York? And if I decide to move to Manhattan, will I really have to live in a shoebox that costs $5000/month? (Maybe I have answered my first question myself with the second one?)

5:29 PM

This is probably the best contest I have ever heard of. But I don't know if I will enter because if I did win, I would be way too nervous meeting Maureen Johnson. Anyway, I'm excited to read Suite Scarlett and I have two questions for the author that aren't really that much about the book. Do you think it's important for YA authors to include in their books some sort of moral lesson about the betterment of self (or something like that)? What high school did you go to exactly? Every time I hear you describe it, it sounds so much like mine, and my school is often called a "Philadelphia area girls' high school." Thanks for your time and happy birhtday Scarlett!

I'm 19, if only my birthday wasn't so early in the year.

Well I guess i'll just have to go to New York another time. I haven't read Suite Scarlett yet (way more sad crying). So my question is about New York.

Where is your favorite place to shop in New York?

=D

This sucks. I'm 22 and really would love to meet you. :( Oh well.

Anyway, my question is: how many books do you envision to be in the Suite Scarlett series? For some reason, I remember you saying 6, but I might be totally off on that and possibly confusing it with Meg Cabot's Allie Finkle series. lol.

I so wanna win a sleep mask!

My suite scarlett question is... are you still giving away a book in this entry? Because I sort of want a book. Like, a lot. I have three roommates and sleep pretty well without a mask so far... but a book? I need a book. Please?

Well thats just crappy, I was really hoping to win Suite Scarlett! But its alright, I suppose I'll just buy it now.

But the ultra crappy thing is that I'm 20 so I can't enter the contest! Which I suppose is good because I have twin daughters, and I don't know I'd be able to go on the trip if I entered and won anyway. It'll be awesome for the person who does win, though. In advance, yay for them!

Hmm lets see, how did you come up with the idea of writing Suite Scarlett, oh and how many books is the series going to be?

I'd love to win a sleep mask =)

Did you get to stay in a posh New York hotel while researching Suite Scarlett? And are they as good as they look in movies? (Sadly, I am too old for the competition and appear to know no children in the right age group, so cannot check this out for myself)

Does it count as a question about Suite Scarlett if I ask why people older than 18 are not eligible for the contest?? As Shakespeare would say, HATH NOT A 22 YEAR OLD EYES? DOTH SHE NOT WANT TO MEET MAUREEN JOHNSON????

That aside, I really do want one of those sleep masks, so a for real question about Scarlett (which I loveloveloveloved and recommended- along with The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks- for the May/June books for my book club). The book obviously has tons of incredible and outrageous stuff in it- but what the best thing you had to cut out?

I have an intense desire for one of those sleep masks. That time I begged my parents for an entire year to get me a My Size Barbie Repunzel doll? Yeah, that's nothing compared to how much I want that sleep mask. Ditto the Easybake Oven and that ginormous robot from the Power Rangers movie (actually I did not want this. I needed it. I was going to use it for really important things like getting the Twinkies down off the top shelf and avoiding floods) I simply must have one of those sleep masks. And so, here is my incredibly deep and complicated and important question about New York:

Why did they name it New York? Is there an Old York we should know about? (wait...there is? Does this mean my question doesn't count?)I have the same problem with Mini Coopers. None of us have ever seen a full sized Cooper driving around, so why the mini? We might as well call you Normal-sized Maureen...just incase there's a slightly smaller Maureen out there somewhere.

Hey, Maureen, my question is do you know just how many Starbuck places there are in New York? I envy you so much because you probably have one like a block away but for small townies as i have to travel THREE hours to the nearest Starbuck's. The real beauty of New York, in my opinion, relies on such ease and quickness you have knowing there's always gonna be coffee.

3. Hey there Maureen, what's it like in New York City?
4. Are the sleep masks regular sleep masks, or are they dead ferrets?
5. Why are they called "books?"

7. Why am I asking so many questions?

Is living in NYC really as expensive as everyone says it is (that is to say, highly expensive)? If so, how can you afford it? Are you one of those rare breed of writers who are quite wealthy?

Hi Maureen!
My question is whether the Hopewell Hotel is based on any particular NY hotel or merely the product of a great imagination? ;)

Hey MJ!
That is such a bummer--I turned 19 on April 29th! Oh well, maybe I'll get another chance to meet you, if/when you go on tour. My NYC question is why is it called "the big apple?" Is it because the city is everyone's apple in their eyes? (Where did those expressions come from, anyways?) I would also like to enter for the free copy of Suite Scarlett. Oh, here's another question: How did you come up with the name Suite Scarlett? Did you already have it before you started writing/finished the book, or was it a last minute sort of thing?

today is my birthday and my mom made waffles :)

it reminded me of Suite Scarlett (cause while she can cook normal food, breakfast is not her thing. they were nasty)

so my question is: where is the best place in New York to get waffles?

MJ-la, this question has been tugging at my non-existent ponytails for quite some time now:

when i look at Scarlett, in all her twisted blonde, ruby red, strangely dazzling glory, my thoughts fly directly out the window and straight into the arms of King Kong. why? cuz she looks EXACTLY like how i picture that grrl that King Kong kidnaps! and considering a major King Kong battle happens on the Empire State building, i just coodnt help but wonder...

did you model Scarlett after that grrl?!

-Lizzy-wa OUT! :?

Oh Ms. Johnson, how exciting! My question is as follows:
If a policeman, Zac Effron (post-hamster eating) and a crack addict throw a bowl into the air in a New York soup kitchen, what is the bowl's velocity?
I understand that this is a complex question, so I'll also ask who Scarlett's favorite Beatle is.
Thank you very much! Affection
- Katy
