BAD WITH FOOD, GOOD WITH LOVE

Okay, seriously. I don’t ever want to pack my suitcase again. I know some people like a vagabond life on the road, riding the rails and sleeping rough and eating stew out of a can . . . but I am done for now. I have bounced from London to Bologna to DAPHNE’S WEDDING, to Texas, to Philadelphia for the election . . . and now I want to stay in the New York office for a little while and update my blog and eat snacks.

Me at the Texas Library Association Conference last week with fellow speaker Libba Bray and newfound friend "Scratchy Jack."

In fact, I just bought these little mint chocolate Tofuti Cutie ice cream sandwiches tonight. I love mint chocolate Tofuti Cuties, but I rarely buy them. It took me a while to get them home, and they really should have gone in the freezer for a while, but I really, really wanted one. And you know that way you can sometimes eat when no one is watching and you have something you really, really want . . . even if that something is a Tofuti Cutie ice cream sandwich that has long passed the solid stage. I am, on the whole, fairly decorous . . . but I abandoned all that and ripped one of those soggy things out of the box and now I have mint chocolate Tofuti Cutie on every single part of my body, including my knee.

So I am not at my best tonight. But I want to get back on the blog train. There are many things to tell you! Daphne’s wedding! Adventures in the Democratic process! Other stuff! Like . . . the real release of Suite Scarlett and all the stuff that comes with it! I have days and days of blog in me—and I am BACK. So I will start tonight and KEEP THE BALL ROLLING!

I should, however, give out some stuff first and foremost. And at the end of this, I will give out more stuff. I was slightly overwhelmed by the number of people who want Scarletts. I looked over at my pile and said, “Erp.” But I will do all I can to distribute what I have, and the books should be IN ALL STORES within the week.

But! PRIZES!

The ten sleep masks are going to:

Reader Rabbit
Kelly-Kathleen
Katie
Larisa
Lightforms
Jenn H
Emily
JK
Caillie
. . . and one anonymous person who left a question about the dining room in the hotel, which I cannot really answer here without giving too much info away.

And the randomly chosen winner of a signed copy is NINA, who wrote about herself in the third person.

Please e-mail me your names and addresses so that I can send your prizes at once!

Now, when you get behind on your blog because you have been in a near-constant state of transit for weeks, you also get behind on your e-mail. So when I sat here tonight reading through some of your precious letters, I discovered MANY GEMS. Including this one, which I though you guys would like, from a guy named Charlie.

(Not charlieissocool—though I have spoken to that Charlie as well. When I was in England a few weeks ago, minding my own business and settling down in front of the television with tea and biscuit to watch a little mindless programming about people buying houses, which is 90% of all British television . . . Charlie’s head popped on to the screen and started talking. His head was HUGE. Turns out, Charlie is in a commercial for BBC3. But I wasn’t expecting to see him. It startled me. Tea went in the air. Biscuit rolled under the sofa. I recovered, got a new cup of tea and biscuit, sat back down, and then . . . MY FRIEND GRACE DANGEROUS APPEARED ON TV. It was her old commercial, back again. Scene was repeated with tea and biscuit, and I was left wondering why I knew so many people in England who wound up on television. Is EVERYONE in England on television? Also, you probably think I have serious problems with food now, and I am starting to think you are right. I wrote to Charlie and reported this incident, and he advised me to hold my tea with both hands.)

Anyway, not that Charlie. Different Charlie. This is the note Charlie sent to me several weeks ago:

I recently found out that the favorite book of this girl who I am starting to date was something called "Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes." I was going to ask her to prom and wanted to ask her in a unique and creative way. I wanted to get to know her better, so I went out and bought your book. After reading the book, I came up with the perfect plan. I would create my own "Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes" and give them to her. I tried to follow what you did in the book, but I put my own spin on it. On each envelope, I put a direction as to when she needs to open that envelope. Inside each envelope is a special message to her or a date I have set up for the two of us. Dates ranging from going on walk on the beach, going to the zoo, or going to the theater. On the second envelope I put "Open Only When Told." So I sent her a dozen roses and in the card that came with the flowers, it said to open up that envelope. In that letter I told her how I felt about her and asked her to prom. She of course loved everything and said yes. I gave her my copy of your book with the envelopes and now the book is being passed from junior to junior at my high school. So thanks to your writing, I was able to ask her to the prom in a spectacular way and do something for her that she probably will never forget. She's keeping all of her friends updated on when she opens up each letter. She was ecstatic about everything!

What was that little pitter-patter in my chest? That was my heart growing EIGHT SIZES IN ONE DAY. How was this possible? How could I—notoriously the least romantic person in the tri-state area—inspire such an act of romantic wonderment?

I asked Charlie for more details, and he just sent me this excellent photo of he and his girlfriend at the prom. What an ad! I could have a whole career in setting up love matches! I could be the eharmony of YA!

READ MY BOOKS: GET RESULTS!

I’ve exhausted myself now. I need another Tofuti Cutie. Those things are small. I will be back in a MUCH MORE TIMELY FASHION with all kinds of important news . . . including THE BIG CONTEST ANNOUCEMENT!

To enter to win today’s signed copy of Suite Scarlett, simply leave a comment like last time. All comments welcome! Is there something you feel I must report on now that I am back on the blogging wagon? Something you need me to know? Do YOU need my now-famous LOVE ADVICE? Whatever! Just leave a comment, and one will be picked COMPLETELY AT RANDOM.

Charlie's story is so adorable! If only the British boy I like so much would ask me out . . . sadly we tease each other mercilessly.

Moving on from my incessant rambling, I would very much love a copy of Suite Scarlett! I've been so incredibly busy lately (tonight I've had to memorize two scripts--one being a skit to perform in front of hundreds of people for a project, and the other being part of Macbeth for class). Needless to say, I've not had much time for errand running!

Oh man those Tofuti Cutie ice cream sandwiches sound soooo good, and they should be with that mouthful of a name, lol. Granted I'm all ice creamed out having just eaten some Ben and Jerry's Phish Food, soooo nummy. I bet you're happy to be back!

Oh and Charlie's story was so cute!(and the picture of his girlfriend and him at prom is cute as well!) I wish a guy would do that for me. Now that I have twin daughters I'm not attracting any guys though, lol. All the love I need comes from my girls though =).

I'd love to win a copy of Suite Scarlett! Scarlett is one of my favorite names, one of my girls was almost a Scarlett. Wow, sorry for the long comment.

Winning a copy of Suite Scarlett would still make me possibly the happiest person ever, especially because I have not one but two tests tomorrow and one is in MATH.

And of course I could use your love advice, as the guy in question seems to delight in confusing me to no end, but I understand that this is normal guy behavior, so I am not unduly alarmed.

I want to know why ALL YOUNG ADULT WRITERS USE MACBOOKS. Ooohh It makes me all kinds of angry because I myself want to be a young adult writer but it seems that to be one, one must purchase and love [or in Libba's case, treat with respect for the Mac hotline] their Mac. I don't want a Mac... I either have to start a revolution or transfer all my ABBA files from Napster to iTunes. That would take so much time, Maureen. I can't be without ABBA that long. I just cant! What should I do?

I love Tofutti cuties. Even more so now that I am lactose intolerant. Never had the mint though. Never even seen the mint in my store. I will now have to search them out.

Burning question I need to know the answer to: Which is the better ABBA song in your opinion? Gimme, Gimme, Gimme or Voulez-Vous? I can never quite decide between the two.

I'd love a signed Suite Scarlett, btw.

I am still poor and I would still like a copy of Scarlett.

Something I must report on? Hmm.. well.. I'm lactose intolerant...and I like tofutti cuties and related products... and I have to report that the supermarket up the street doesn't carry them - and I don't drive, so if I want to buy dairy free ice cream I need to travel using public transportation to a supermarket the next town over and spend more money there...and they're usually melted when I get back... which is yet another reason why I'm poor and sad and cannot afford to buy Scarlett by myself at this moment.

Also, I never went to prom... and if I did, I doubt I would have ever found a date that knew how to read. I guess I do need love advice, then. I go to a school that's 96% female... I can has boyfriendz?

If, by some weird force, this comment is picked, please choose another, because I already have both Suite Scarlett and a signed copy of Girl At Sea, and I remember how lonely it felt not to win anything. I just wanted to say that I loved the book (I rode my bike eight miles to B&N last weekend through the insane traffic of South Florida just to pick it up).
I'll mention the connection to Hamlet because of one thing--I just recently finished reading/watching it in my British Lit class, and have since been seeing it EVERYWHERE. I'm reading The Eyre Affair right now, and that brooding Dane pops up every once in a while, just as he was mentioned pretty frequently in Suite Scarlett (I hope that doesn't give much away, other than that there's a play). But seriously... I would have loved to see that performance. And Spencer. A lot.
Oh, and my favorite line ever: "Either that, or you've been reading my That's So Raven fanfiction again."
It was an ingenious convergence of sensibilities. Also, I couldn't stop laughing.
There were a lot of good throwaway lines, though. I won't write anymore, lest I allow something vital about the plot slip.
Toodles!

Yes, yes, needing a copy of Scarlett over here.

Question. When you travel, how do you avoid getting seated next to someone smelly/ill/terrifying on the plane? Notice I don't even want someone fabulous - just someone not scary. I am still scarred by a NYC-LA flight where my seatmate, a stranger to hygiene, took off his shoes and socks, then glued his feet to the seat in front of him for five hours. I choke at the memory.

Blogger Hannah Rose said...

Maureen, I need help in the LOVE area, too! Desperately, in fact. Perhaps I will make my own little envelopes, and find someone sweet (or perhaps, 'suite') to send them to. But that's not what I want to ask you today:

Maureen, I want to tell you a story to start off with my question. Something I am very, very extremely upset about. For the past four months or so I have been working on finishing and editing a short story of mine, that I was going to submit to a local writing competition, the winners of which would get published in a small paperback book. So I was really REALLY excited. I mean, I think I've really got something good here!

So I write it, edit it, finish it, put a coverpage on it, tell EVERY SINGLE PERSON I KNOW ABOUT IT, and finally send it in.

...and I get a letter back. Telling me that they "forgot" to put up the word count restriction on the website with the rules, and that my story was too long and therefore out.

I'm kinda heart broken. I have NEVER entered one of my stories in ANYTHING. Also, I have never before let anyone READ my writing. So now I have to tell everyone it ain't happening. That part sucked quite a bit. I mean...THAT STINGS! So while nursing my wounds I was able to reread Suite Scarlett, which helped. (Can I just mention that one of the things I like best about your books is that your characters have PROBLEMS! And not huge catastrophic things like seeing their parental units murder or something from Law and Order, but things like no waffles on their birthdays, or having crazy old women steal tuna and blame in on them. It helps, honestly. But I do wish Scarlett the best, don't get me wrong.)

So I guess there's a question attatched to this. My story is 4,385 words long. In Times New Roman 12 point font it's 15 pages long. But...I SWEAR I've read shorts that are longer.

So question time: How long is a typical short story? When does something change from a short to a novella to a novel?

Of course I would LOVE to win something, and a SIGNED copy would be amazing, I would probably have to frame it or something, but an answer to my question would be pretty peachy too.

And..PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE BIG CONTEST IN NEW YORK!

All my love,

Hannah Rose

Your heart grew! Like the Grinch.
(I mean that, of course, in the nicest way possible.) And as each and every other girl to respond to this post has, I feel I must comment on the utter, complete, insane adorable-ness of Charlie's scheme. But I think that I appreciate this adorable-ness especially, because of the lack of romance in the history of my life.
For instance, when I was nine, a boy told me that he liked me. He first, however, stole my favorite jacket and my Nestle Wonderball and I never saw either ever again.
And the first time a (different) boy asked me out, he did so on a series of post-it notes.
I'm certain that however (if ever) I am asked to prom, it will pale in comparison. Seriously pale. Me(bookworm of Irish heritage) vs. Model in Cruise Ship Commerial pale. I will probably be shouting at the guy, like, "Yeah, fine, I'll go... BUT WHY COULDN'T YOU BE MORE LIKE CHARLIE?"
He'd probably revoke the offer, in reaction to my demonic shouting. Hmm.
(Clearly, I could use your love advice...)
And, I could also use a copy of SUITE SCARLETT!
Please?
Don't I sound pathetic enough?
Read the comment again if you aren't sure. I am pathetic enough.

If you were to write a novel about a zombie apocalypse, would your main character most likely be:

I don't remember what I wrote last time, but since it is 7:30 in the morning I am slightly less witty.

So - Suite Scarlett would be really awesome. I went by my local B&N but did not happen to find one. Alas.

On Libba Bray's blog, she revealed some embarrasing details of her adolescence. I was wondering if you would ever do the same for your readers...

MJ, I would love a copy of Sweet Scarlett. It would make my day, no my week, no my MONTH! Maybe even my whole year, and being a poor student, I have no money to spend on such luxuries as books...all my money goes towards gas in my car.

Is Tofuti Cutie Ice Cream made of Tofu? And if so, why? Isn't tofu supposed to replace meat? So does Tofuti Cutie Ice Cream taste like meat? Are there different flavours - like Beef Bourgignon and Chicken a la Zombies?
PS I'm excited for your SS - your books are like the pink shoes of storytelling. Totally coveted.

I just finished reading Suite Scarlett! Arguably my favorite book you've ever written. You know, Mrs. A reminds me a lot of Jk Rowling... Could this be some sort of secret message? Must go reread it looking for secret ways to destroy her and save Alan Rickman.

aww..such a cute love story. and I'm sure they're thrilled that their story is now all over the internet for everyone to read and for them to be embarrassed by many years later. :D

but i must admit a copy of Suite Scarlett would be lovely, especially since i blew all my money on a book spree recently and my supplies have not yet been replenished. not to mention the grumpy book store lady who still doesnt like me and refuses to tell me when Suite Scarlett comes in.

in other news, i just found out today that dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood donors. I dont quite know why, but I found that rather amusing. It's actually pretty gruesome when you think about it..but in the end, duelling is pretty fawesome. I may move to Paraguay someday just for that.

I just bought Tofuti Cutie's due to how much you raved about them on here and I think you should know that it's probably going to be the death of me. These things are AFREAKINGMAZING. I don't even know what to do with myself now. Thank you for being the best go-to on the vegetarian/vegan ice cream front. You win.

Because, I was hungry, so I put a potato in the microwave. When I got it out, I dropped it on my foot. Then the dog ate it. So now my foot is burned, and my dog ate my potato.

Somehow, I guess that means I should get a copy of your book? It would definitely make me feel better.

It wasn't ispired by your book (because it hadn't even been written yet) but I actually asked my prom date in almost exactly the same way. I had a long set of riddles and tasts that led everywhere, an she had no idea who was leading her around school and town on this hunt, so I obliged to help her solve it... There were a few instances where I planted things as we walked by, and then pointed to them and said, "hey, what's this?" All of my friends helped as well, and at the end when I asked her out, she almost cried.

13 LBE did inspire me though, and now I am moving to Germany to travel Europe in August, and my girl (not the same one, although I have known her since high school- 9 years) is leaving in one month's time. She will go and apply to schools there, I will continue to work here and send money until she gets a job. If it had not been for that book, I wouldn't have the desire to go and see half of the places in there. So wish us luck.

Oh, and I would like a copy!

That's such a sweet story. :)

Libba Bray is actually somewhat responsible for my current relationship. I was reading the comments on her blog and discovered one by a girl named Kayley (my name, spelled exactly the same) who was like "Hi Libba, I'm the girl you met at the Lake Forest Park book signing who told you about my brother Andrew Hyde who was in that indie movie, Zombies of Mass Destruction!" And I was all, OMG, a) I was also at that book signing, and b) I think that guy Andrew lives on the floor below me in my dorm. So I struck up a conversation with him about the craziness of our coincidences, and now we've been dating for two and a half months. :)

You crazy YA authors and your incidental matching abilities!

... this cutie tofutie business intrigues me.. I'm not a vegetarian, but that fact doesn't keep me from enjoying vegetarian food stuffs ... I should probably just convert... but that is where my indecisiveness kicks in... oh well... i need a mighty good dose of guilt to scare me off meat for good...

how goes life for free monkey and his cousins?
and your microbe?... omg!!! i gifted one of them to my best friend this past christmas... T4 if I remmeber correctly... I'm expecting penicillin, or a brain cell for my birthday... yayness! i just randomly remembered that... awesome!

... *yawn* I am going to lie on my ceiling now... to dredge up old memories and enjoy the "tropicalness" of my home.
and, no... tropicalness is not a word...

Hi Maureen. I have a little story to tell you:

There once was a girl with brown hair and green eyes, who had a cat that thought she was a chinchilla. Now, one day, the girl with brown hair, green eyes and the chinchilla-cat wanted a book called Suite Scarlet, but her mummy said no because the bookstore was too far away. So the girl asked the chinchilla-cat what she should do, and the chinchilla-cat said:
'You should ask the author'. At least, that is what we assume the chinchilla cat said, since I don't speak chinchilla... or cat. So the girl with the brown hair and green eyes did. And then Atlantis sank. The end.

Don't you love happy stories?

Dear Maureen,
I love, love, LOVE your blog!
And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE all of the books of yours that I have read. Unfortunately, I have not been able to read the Bermudez Triangle, it's not at the library, only on our "Book Mobile" and (I feel silly to admit) I do not get how you access books on the book mobile, when they do not come to your school (as they do not come to mine, I think).
And I have not read Suite Scarlet, because it is not at the library yet, and I haven't yet seen it at the book store. So...
I would absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have a copy of Suite Scarlet.
Anna
