YOUR BREAKING DAWN QUESTIONS ANSWERED

It is impossible to be in the world of YA and not mark the release of Breaking Dawn, which came out this Sunday to wild fanfare. I saw many vampires and werewolves on the subway on Friday—many more than normal. All were heading to the bookstore! I like big events in which many, many people crowd bookstores. And I like the fact that people are so excited to read!

There’s been a lot of talk about Breaking Dawn since it came out. It’s sparked a spirited debate. Again, I saw, hooray! So much book discussion!

In fact . . . the discussion is EVERYWHERE. My inbox is flooded with questions from people who want to know what I think about the book and the issues it raises. As you know by now, I don’t shy away from the hard questions. Today, I wanted to talk about a few of the critical questions. I hope this can in some way inform your arguments, or maybe just add to your general knowledge base.

***WARNING: MILD SPOLIERS AHEAD, BUT PROBABLY THINGS YOU HAVE HEARD ALREADY IF YOU ARE, YOU KNOW, ALIVE AND CAN READ***

ARE VAMPIRES REAL?

Vampires are 100% real, but, of course, they don’t behave in the way you see in stories. Real vampires are extremely boring.

Vampires do not generally attack anymore because the government carefully regulates them. The Red Cross was invented as a cover organization to provide them with all the blood they need. It is generally assumed that this marks the point at which vampires actually stopped being cool, putting on awesome outfits and hunting their prey. They became lazy and complacent, sitting around waiting for their blood deliveries in their underwear.

Mostly, vampires hang around the house, spending almost all their time online, leaving incredibly tedious and needlessly complicated comments to discussion boards and updating their blogs. All vampires have blogs. You have never read one because they are so boring, no one ever links to them. They also run Wikipedia.

It is a tremendous act of charity that so many writers take on the subject of vampires and make them sound glamorous. Vampires love to read vampire novels, but being the annoying creatures they are, they tend to obsess over all the wrong details. Instead of noticing all the sexy and cool things that the vampires in the books do, they will focus on minutiae (“in chapter three, the author says the main character’s car is forest green, but in chapter eight, it’s more like lime!”).

Make no mistake, though. Vampires are dangerous. Given the chance, they will come into your house and talk to you—about obscure literary theories, the history of the tractor, the taxation system in ancient Mesopotamia—whatever takes their fancy. Because they don’t need to breathe, they can talk and talk and talk until you die. And then they eat you.

Real vampires are socially awkward.

ARE WEREWOLVES REAL?

No, of course not.

WHY DO YOU THINK BELLA CALLED HER BABY RENEESME?

Why does anyone do anything? Here is a picture of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, as carved from a 2,000 pound block of cheese. Why did someone do this? I HAVE NO IDEA. I mean . . . what do you do with it? Do you eat it? Do you just keep it around until it molds? Do you keep it in a refrigerated unit forever? This kind of thing keeps me up at night and makes me feel like I don’t understand anything. It also really makes me hungry for a cracker. Do you see what I mean? DO YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN???

One of life’s wonders.

ARE YOU READY FOR MARRIAGE?

As more or less everyone knows by now, whether they’ve ever read the books or not . . . Bella and Edward get married. Edward is 17 by way of 80 (vampire years), and Bella is 18. Getting married at eighteen is a fairly shocking prospect these days, at least where I come from. How do you know if you’re ready? How do you know if the time is right?

I found this highly informative two-part video that will tell you everything you need to know about this question. Please watch it carefully.

If you want to continue learning, please watch the second half, in which more graphs are produced:

IN THE BOOK, THE VAMPIRES ARE VERY SHINY. DO YOU HAVE ANY SHINY THINGS THAT YOU CAN SHOW US?

Thank you for asking! Yes I do. Not only is this shiny, but it is the best disco number of all time. I have personally just watched this twenty-five times in a row, and if I don't get one of those sparkle outfits, I will die. (If you look closely, you will notice that their microphones are color coordinated to their outfits. Oh, Abba. You and your constant perfection!)

Today’s Scarlett winner is kuri-skoldpadda. The summer of Scarlett giveaway is almost over, but not YET! So another book to another random commenter. Do you have any more book-related questions I can answer, about any books at all?

I came here(for the...third time today, all for strange, mysterious reasons I'm not sure of) to find out about what you thought of Mama Mia! then, I found this.
And what do I have to say about it?
CHEESE NAMED RENESEME IS THE ANSWER.
But the question?
No one will ever know.
Thanks for being so awesome.

Oh, and Maureen, I have this friend her name is Ada, and I love her, and she really really wants a copy of Suite Scarlett. It would be much appriciated! Especially considering I'm moving to another state to go to boarding school ion 3 days. And she might need something to distract her. I know I will. Leaving friends and family are the worst.

Please leave me out of the givaway, I have a copy.

I still haven't gotten Breaking Dawn yet. It hasn't come yet in the mail. And I could have been first in line at borfers opening night. But I did not have money to buy the book. And my mommy said I only needed one.

i have a few questions and i typed this whole thing out and then my computer died so let me try this again.
1)Do you think that a reason edward is so persistant about getting married is because he is afriad that bella will find some one else that will put her life in less danger or do you think there is some other reason
2)do you think more of the book should have been in jacobs point of veiw because i know i would love to know what the packs were thinking when the vultri were there.
3)have you read the lord of the rings trilogy if so who was your faverite hobbit

I think Renesmee was a pretty crappy name, but thats about the only thing I didn't like about Breaking Dawn. (though Bella should have been able to fly. That would've been awesome). (Also, the book needed more Emmett. All books need a little bit of Emmett Cullen).

But is this choice of a random commenter to win a copy of Suite Scarlett really random? Or do you just choose you're favorite comment and say its random? Will it help my chances by saying that I nearly died laughing while reading Suite Scarlett, and that Spencer is now one of my favorite literary figures of all time? Will it help to say that seeing Mamma Mia (the movie) has made me listen to my mother's ABBA's greatest hits cd over and over again? Because if saying all those things helps my chances of getting picked, then the selection is not really random. But saying all those things couldn't really hurt my chances.

Ok, some of my questions are:
1. As an author of YA literature what do you think of YA authors that try to teach a lesson to their readers?
(for example, killing of characters so readers will learn about loss and suffering that it is inevitable etc.)
2. Do you agree with John Green that books are extremely overpriced?
3. What have you read lately?(Besides Breaking Dawn)

I loved Breaking Dawn by the way, and your theory about vampires makes me think that most of my professors at college are vampires ( they HAVE to be!)
I don't know if shamefully asking for a copy of suite scarlet constitutes as part of your process of choosing or eliminations but..um..*hint* *hint* :)I want one!

Why do the commenters above me take these book questions so seriously? No one seems to appreciate the ABBA. I was listening to "Honey Honey" while reading this blog post.
Why hasn't there been an ABBA-inspired novel in which the main characters wear awesome fur coats in the snow and are practically perfect? Also, how do I get a straight guy to listen to ABBA? He admits his love of "Dancing Queen," and isn't that how we all start out?

In the book it says that Bella names her baby Renesmee as a mix between her mother, Renee, and Edward's "mother", Esme. It was a gesture of love to the baby's grandmothers.

Perhaps the REAL Edward only hired a stunningly handsome actor to play him in the books. Bella did not fall in love with Edward, she fell in love with an actor pretending to be Edward. A shiny actor. While Edward is updates his blog all day, the actor is wooing Bella.

I'll never learn. I always think that I can spot a spoiler from great distance magically before I actually read it. That has never worked, why would it have worked now?

Yeah, I got spoiled. Not much, but enough. You did warn me, but did I listen? *sigh*

I'll survive. Thinking about vampires, those poor creatures who have been doomed to eternal boredom... My problems look small.

Oh, and I have a book related question for you! In Looking for Alaska by John Green, what does that "great perhaps" -thing mean? Am I just too stupid to understand it? ^^'

And I have another question, too. I don't have much money, so I can't afford to buy more than one of your books right now. I already have the Suite Scarlett you sent me. Which one of the rest would you recommend for me?

Hi Maureen,
I'd LOOOOVE a copy of Suite Scarlett which I, alas, cannot buy since I have no more graduation money after spending it all on about 10 other books two of which you wrote (13 Little Blue Envelopes and Girl at Sea). Plus I have only won one thing in my entire life and that was an origami book from my local library. Needless to say my excitement at winning a book was squashed when I recieved a book I had absolutely no use for, since I am completely inept at origami (and find it incredibly boring, sorry to those of you who enjoy it!) SO I would absolutely love a copy, sorry that was so long :)

I have a question. I just noticed that on the cover of The Bermudez Triangle, the 'M' in 'Bermudez' and the 'A' in 'Triangle' are both a little out of line. Does that have anything to do with Mel and Avery, or is it just a coincidence?

Hahahaha. Breaking Dawn disappointed me so much. But I feel better after reading your blog.

My bookish/authorish/literaturish questions:
1)Do you think books suffer or are benefited by being turned into movies? Provide examples if you so wish.
2)Has the fan reaction to Breaking Dawn frightened you, as a YA author?

To all the commenters explaining how Renesemee was picked: Yes, we do actually understand that Renee+Esme+blow to the head= Renesemee. We get the complex scientific equation to how it was created. What we fail to understand is why, WHY, anyone would really bestow that horrid moniker to an actual, sentient being with feelings. If my parents used that principal naming me, I'd be Nanaine Raylie. Or Lorrancy Charmond. Clearly, this is a bad equation that ought to be avoided at all costs.

MJ, if one of your book characters ever gets demonically, impossibly pregnant or you write in an epilogue describing the adult lives of your characters and their kids before they board the train to school, can you promise me that you will get outsider advice as to what the children's names should be? Please, please, promise me this.

I'm so glad you decided to blog about Breaking Dawn--I was so disappointed by Breaking Dawn but your post cheered me up somewhat.

1) Have you read any awesome YA books lately?

2) If vampires are so mundane, and werewolves don't exist, then what about faeries?

3) This isn't so much a question as a request, or an idea, I guess. Would you blog about who would be cast in what book you've written for the main characters? I'm very curious to know for some reason. Especially for Suite Scarlet and Devilish

1. i love how people here assume that you've read breaking dawn. seriously. have you noticed? nowhere in your post does it say you've read any of the books, but everyone assumes you have.

2. i would also love to win a copy of suite scarlett. like a commenter above me, i never win anything. i didn't even win bingo at my senior all night party. actually, i didn't win anything at my senior all night party at all except a game of ping pong, for which there was no prize. and a tarot card reader told me i was going to be unlucky in love. in all, i'd say the night wasn't entirely awesome, though i did succeed in getting my paper airplane stuck in the basketball hoop of the gym. this was during the whoever-gets-their-paper-plane-closest-to-the-nose-of-the-pirate-on-the-gym-floor-wins-a-prize game (yes, this is a true story). needless to say, i didn't win that either, though i did win lots of laughs.

Hello Maureen. I thought your part about vampires being socially awkward was fantastic. I loved that.

I would like a book. I know we all would.

In an interview, John Green stated that he didn't care as much about "who ends up with who" as much as he cares about deeper ideas such as spirituality, which is one thing he tries to put into his books. Do you feel that romance can have a deeper meaning than mere entertainment, and what ideas or messages do you try to put into your books, you feel?

Today was the first lesson of the compulsory music course in upper secondary school. You know what we did? WE SANG AND LISTENED TO AND LEARNED ABOUT AND WROTE ABOUT ABBA! All lesson was about Abba, and a little bit about the musicals Benny and Björn have done after Abba. We sang Money Money Money, and Mamma Mia, and SOS, and the teacher really tried to make sure that we know everything about them.

Now I know that Finnish education is the best in the world. Everyone HAS to take that music course. They won't graduate without it. And what is so very important that everyone has to know about it? Abba, of course!

Hrm. Interesting . . . I guess. I've never read Twilight so I don't know more about it than I've read in chat rooms. I hear that a lot of people didn't like the end of Breaking Dawn though, and so a lot of people returned it to their bookstores. I don't think that there is any area of this situation that doesn't suck. Readers get a bad (ish?) book, bookstores don't get any money, and Stephanie Meyer, who has put so much time and effort into this series, gets negative feedback. Do you think this hurts more or less than having a book banned? How do authors deal with negative feedback? Your books are like your children, aren't they?

Oh right, I would like a copy of Suite Scarlett (or whatever else you're giving away).

Another/more book question/s: how much paper is used/wasted writing a book?

Which is your favorite of the books you've written?

Of the books you've read?

Do you use the Oxford Comma?

One space after periods, or two?

OK So I didn't read any of the above commments because I was afraid of super mega spoilers. I just got Breaking Dawn from my friend and I love the beggining! I would love to have a wedding like that. I feel horrible for Jacob becuase hes so I don't know "Jacob" I hope things work out for him because it breaks my heart to see him so sad.

Thank you very very veryvery much for the MST3K references.
Made of win.

And I must admit I enjoyed Breaking Dawn, despite its crack-tastic plot points, and the fact that she named her baby Renesmee (I will say right now I hated that name). It may not be fantastic fictional spinnery, but it sure was entertaining.

MJ, I have to say I think you post the best videos in the history of the blogosphere.
Book related questions? here's one.
Do you think the Twilight Saga is anti-feminist? There has actually been a good amount of arguing over this issue lately.

Also, what are your thoughts on rabid fans?
Personally, I love them, mostly because I am a rabid fan. I just don't understand why other normal people are scared of us...
